Wednesday, October 9 was a beautiful day to walk or ride bicycle to school. Our 2013 event generated three times the number of students that walked or bicycled to school on a regular day. On September 25, about 11.9 % of the students or about 63 either walked or bicycled. The day of our event saw 35% or about 186 students get here on their own power!
Many school staff members escorted groups of walkers from designated points around our school neighborhoods. Other staff supervised the student council members as they distributed coupons to the walkers and bikers. The bikers and walkers redeemed the coupons at a table manned by student council inside the cafeteria. Thanks to UnitedHealthCare, the walkers were rewarded with their choice of water bottles or flashing reflectors. Each bicycle rider took home a new bike helmet! Our wonderful PTO provided refreshments for the adults that walked to school with their student.
It was a magnificent Walk to School day! Thanks to the staff of Highlands Elementary, the student council, Highlands PTO and UnitedHealthCare for making it memorable!
