Today I had the pleasure of visiting half of the first and second grade classes. The topic we discussed was sleep! The first grade students learned they need a little less than 11 hours of sleep each night. The second grade students discovered that 10 1/2 hours a night is the ideal amount for their growing bodies! Through the kidshealth.org website flash game "Time for Bed" we took a challenge and found out the sleep requirements of several animals. Lions sleep about 20 hours a day and giraffes only about 30 minutes a day!
The purpose of a bedtime routine was another topic we covered. Strategies for sleep were shared by many students. Last, we learned why giraffes sleep standing up, flamingos sleep standing on one leg, and goldfish sleep with their eyes open!
I love the interaction with the students! They are so eager to soak in the information and share stories! One new tip I shared with them- try reading in bed with a flashlight!
I will see the other half of each grade on Friday afternoon.
